Intertidal Networks

pencilsauce_CC_00_intertidal_networks_soniakefiThis illustration was for a piece about how networks can collapse when keystone species are lost. Sonia Kefi studied intertidal networks along the Chilean coast to identify a comprehensive network among known trophic and non-trophic interactions among 100 species.

Discovering the strangeness of some of the organisms that she speaks about was a surreal experience. Here for instance, is a gooseneck barnacle from the mid intertidal zone.

You find them on all kinds of debris left in the sea as well.
